Grout color sealing guide · Published November 3, 2026

Yes, you can change grout color without regrouting
Yes. Grout color sealing changes the color of your existing grout without removing it. The grout is deep-cleaned first, any missing grout is filled in, and then a color sealant is applied by hand to every grout line. The result is one even, like-new color across the whole floor, and the seal helps the grout resist spills and stains.
At Hank's Carpet Cleaning we do grout color sealing in homes across DFW. It's cheaper than regrouting, it's done in one day, it lasts 5 to 10 years for most homes with proper care, and every job comes with a 3-year labor warranty. Prices start at a $600 minimum, and your exact price comes from a few photos of your floor.
The rest of this guide covers how it works, how it compares with regrouting and with a plain grout cleaning, which colors you can choose, where it works and where it doesn't, what it costs, and how to take care of it afterward.
What grout color sealing actually is
Grout is porous. Over the years it soaks up mop water, spills, cooking grease and dirt, and that's why light grout turns gray, brown or blotchy even when the tile itself still looks fine. Dingy grout makes clean tile look dirty.
A color sealant is a coating made for grout. It goes on over clean grout, bonds to it, and gives every line the same color. Because it covers the grout instead of replacing it, nothing is chipped out, there's no grout dust through the house, and the tile stays in place.
Think of it as two jobs in one: a new grout color, and a seal over it that helps keep spills and stains from soaking back in.
How grout color sealing works, step by step
Here's what a grout color sealing job looks like with Hank's, from the first photo to the finished floor.

1. Photos and color choice
You send photos of the floor and pick a color, either in the 60-second color quiz on our grout color sealing page or by text. We text back a preview of your floor in the new color plus your exact price. There's no in-home visit needed to get a price.
2. Deep cleaning the grout
Every grout line is deep-cleaned first, so the sealant bonds to clean grout instead of years of dirt. This step matters more than any other: a color coat over dirty grout won't last.
3. Filling missing grout
Where grout is missing in spots, we fill it in before sealing. That's included in the price, not an add-on.
4. Hand-applying the color, line by line
The color sealant is applied by hand, one grout line at a time, so the color goes on the grout and the finish comes out uniform from wall to wall.
5. Curing
Light foot traffic is fine after 24 hours, and the sealant fully cures in 72 hours. Plan to keep heavy use, rugs and furniture off the floor until then.
6. Your touch-up kit
Every install includes a touch-up kit in your color, so if a spot ever gets nicked you can fix it in seconds.
Grout color sealing vs. regrouting
Regrouting means removing the old grout from every joint and packing new grout in its place. It's the right fix when the grout itself is failing, but most people who ask about it just want their grout to look clean and even again.
If that's you, color sealing gets you there without tearing anything out. Here's how the two compare:
- What happens to the old grout: regrouting removes it; color sealing deep-cleans it and keeps it.
- Color: regrouting gives you the color of the new grout; color sealing gives you the color you pick, in one even shade.
- Stain resistance: color sealing adds a seal over the grout that helps it resist spills and stains.
- Time: our color sealing is done in one day, with light foot traffic after 24 hours.
- Cost: color sealing is cheaper than regrouting. Ours starts at a $600 minimum, and your exact price comes from photos.
- Warranty: our color sealing comes with a 3-year labor warranty.
Can you make grout lighter, darker or a whole new color?
Yes. You choose the color. Because the sealant covers the grout instead of staining it, dark, stained grout can go back to a light color, like the hallway at the top of this page and the floor above, and light grout can go darker if you want lines that hide everyday dirt.
Not sure which color to pick? The color quiz on our grout color sealing page walks you through it, and we text back a preview of your own floor in that color before you decide. Nothing is booked until you've seen it.

Grout color sealing vs. a grout cleaning
If you like your grout color and it's just dirty, a tile and grout cleaning may be all you need. Ours is done with truck-mount equipment and costs $0.90 per square foot with a $500 minimum, before tax, and you can see your exact price and book it online.
Color sealing is the better fit when you want one even color across the floor, when the grout is stained or blotchy and you want it to look new, when you want to change the color, or when you want a seal that helps the grout resist spills and stains from here on. Every color sealing job starts with a deep grout cleaning anyway, so you get both.
How long does color-sealed grout last?
For most homes, grout color sealing lasts 5 to 10 years with proper care.
Every job comes with a 3-year labor warranty that covers peeling, chipping and scraping, as long as no bleach or very harsh scrubbing is used on the grout. Regular mopping and cleaning are fine. And with the touch-up kit included, small nicks don't have to wait for a service call.
Where grout color sealing works
Grout color sealing works on tile floors throughout the house: kitchens, entries, hallways, bathrooms, laundry rooms and living areas.
Showers: we color seal shower walls only, never the shower base or floor.
Natural stone: it works on the grout between natural stone tile like travertine too, and we can deep-clean the stone itself in the same visit. See our natural stone cleaning page for more on stone.
If you're not sure whether your floor is a good fit, send photos. We'll tell you what we see before you book anything.
How much does it cost to change grout color?
Grout color sealing at Hank's has a $600 minimum, before 8.25% Texas sales tax. Your exact price depends on the size of the area and what we see in your photos, so we quote every job from photos: send a few pictures, and we text back your exact price with a preview of the new color.
Right now, the color quiz on our grout color sealing page also takes $50 off. It's one discount per order, so it doesn't combine with other coupons.
If you only want the grout cleaned, not recolored, tile and grout cleaning is $0.90 per square foot with a $500 minimum, and you can see your total online.
How to take care of color-sealed grout
Color-sealed grout is easy to keep up. A few simple habits keep it looking new for years:
- Mop and clean it like normal. Regular mopping is fine.
- Skip bleach and very harsh scrubbing on the grout; they can wear the seal and aren't covered by the warranty.
- Wipe up spills when they happen. The seal helps the grout resist stains, and quick cleanup keeps it that way.
- Use your touch-up kit if a spot ever gets nicked.
- Give it the full 72 hours to cure after the job before heavy use.
