The short answer: about an hour with low-moisture cleaning
Carpet cleaned by Hank's Carpet Cleaning is usually dry in about an hour, because our primary method, low-moisture cleaning, doesn't soak the carpet or the pad. When we use truck-mounted hot-water extraction (steam cleaning), carpet usually takes about 3 to 4 hours to dry. Humidity, airflow and carpet thickness can stretch either time a little.
We're an award-winning DFW carpet cleaner based in Argyle and Southlake, and fast dry times are one of the biggest reasons our customers choose us.
Low-moisture vs steam cleaning dry times
Low-moisture cleaning: about 1 hour. It uses very little water, so the carpet feels only slightly damp when we finish.
Truck-mounted hot-water extraction: about 3 to 4 hours. It rinses the carpet with hot water and pulls it back out with powerful suction. It's great for heavy soil, but more water means more drying time.
Old-style rental machines: often much longer. They put down a lot of water and don't have the suction to pull it back out.
What affects drying time
A few things can make carpet dry faster or slower:
- Humidity: muggy North Texas summer days slow drying; dry winter air speeds it up.
- Airflow: ceiling fans and air conditioning help a lot.
- Carpet thickness: plush and shag carpet holds more moisture than low-pile Berber.
- Heavy soil or spots: extra pre-treatment and rinsing can add some moisture.
- Pad condition: if past spills reached the pad, those areas can take longer.
How to dry carpet faster after cleaning
Simple steps that make a real difference:
- Turn on ceiling fans and keep the AC or heat running.
- Open interior doors so air moves between rooms.
- Skip opening windows on humid or rainy days.
- Keep pets off until the carpet is dry.
- Wear clean socks, not bare feet or shoes, if you have to walk on it.
When can you walk on carpet and put furniture back?
You can walk on low-moisture cleaned carpet right away in clean socks. Wait until it's fully dry, usually about an hour, before letting pets back in or putting furniture back. For steam-cleaned carpet, wait the full 3 to 4 hours.
If you put furniture back early, place plastic tabs or foil squares under wood and metal legs so stains from the finish don't transfer into the damp carpet.

Why fast drying matters
Carpet that stays wet for a long time can start to smell musty, and spots can wick back up to the surface as it dries. That's why we use low-moisture cleaning as our main method and keep extraction for carpet that needs a deeper rinse. Less water means fewer problems and you get your home back sooner.
