The short answer: both work, for different jobs
Low-moisture carpet cleaning is best for most regular cleanings because it lifts dirt without soaking the carpet and dries in about an hour. Steam cleaning (truck-mounted hot-water extraction) is better for heavy soil or a deep rinse, and dries in about 3 to 4 hours. Hank's Carpet Cleaning is a dual-method carpet cleaner in DFW, so our technicians use whichever your carpet needs.
Side-by-side comparison
How the two methods compare on what homeowners care about most:
- Dry time: low-moisture about 1 hour; steam about 3 to 4 hours.
- Water used: low-moisture very little; steam a lot, then extracted.
- Best for: low-moisture regular maintenance, busy homes, fast turnarounds; steam heavy soil, deep rinse, customer preference.
- Risk of over-wetting: low-moisture very low; steam low with a good truck mount and extra dry passes.
- Smell after cleaning: low-moisture no wet-carpet smell; steam fine when dried properly.
- Back to normal: low-moisture same afternoon; steam later that day.
How low-moisture carpet cleaning works
Low-moisture cleaning uses a small amount of cleaning solution and a machine that agitates the carpet so dirt releases from the fibers and gets picked up, instead of flooding the carpet and pulling the water back out. Because the pad doesn't get soaked, carpet dries fast, spots are less likely to wick back up, and there's no damp smell. It's our primary carpet method.
How steam cleaning (hot-water extraction) works
Hot-water extraction sprays heated water and cleaning solution into the carpet, then pulls it out with strong suction from a truck-mounted unit. It's often called steam cleaning. It gives carpet a deep rinse, which is useful for heavily soiled carpet or when a customer simply prefers it. With a truck mount and extra dry passes, carpet usually dries in about 3 to 4 hours.

Which one is right for your carpet?
Here's a quick way to decide:
- Choose low-moisture for routine cleanings, homes with kids and pets who need the room back fast, move-ins and move-outs, and same-day plans.
- Choose steam for carpet that hasn't been cleaned in years, heavy traffic soil, or if you prefer a hot-water rinse.
- Not sure? Your technician checks the carpet and recommends the right method before starting.
Same price either way
Our carpet cleaning prices are the same whichever method is used: 3 rooms are $210, rooms 4 to 6 are $50 each, a staircase is $60 and a hallway $25, before tax. Want hot-water extraction?
